Student Art Showcase Makes Primas Fundraiser Even Sweeter

03 Apr, 2024

Our SAA-SDS Fine Arts teachers are always looking for ways to show off our students’ creativity and talent! By encouraging participation in contests, scheduling exhibits, and planning community outreach, these talented educators prove that they know the importance of being connected with our community.

Lower School Art Teacher Meghan Slater (‘02) recently seized a new opportunity, joining forces with fellow SAA alumna Rachel Mullen (‘03), owner of Primas Bakery + Boutique, who was planning to host her second fundraiser event for SAA-SDS. Mrs. Slater explained, “Showcasing student artwork in a local business has been a goal of mine for a few years now. It is so important for students' artistic talents to be viewed beyond the SAA-SDS hallways and exposed to the community.”

Rachel thought it was a great idea, sharing: “We're thrilled about featuring student artwork at Primas Bakery. It brings us great joy to provide a platform that celebrates student creativity and artistic expression.”

Mrs. Slater was able to propel her SAA 5th grade students’ study of Wayne Thiebaud (an American painter known for his colorful works depicting commonplace objects, including sweets) into an art showcase. Our students created beautiful pieces, depicting everything from macarons to key lime pie, from banana splits to cotton candy. “Being able to tie in our Wayne Thiebaud theme with the Primas’ event was literally the icing on the cake!” she said.

Supporting SAA-SDS is important to Rachel, who shared, “As an alumna of SAA, I believe in giving back to the school community that shaped me. Partnering with the school for fundraiser events allows me to contribute to its continued success and support future generations of students.”

Be sure to stop by Primas tomorrow, April 4, to participate in the fundraiser event and to admire the work of our SAA grade 5 students. The art will be on display from April 4-22, so if you miss out tomorrow, stop by another time. Thank you to Rachel for always supporting your alma mater, and to Mrs. Slater for always putting our students first!
