Meet the Lower School St. Agnes and St. Dominic SGA Presidents
Elected by their peers, the Lower School St. Agnes and St. Dominic SGA Presidents lead the student body by example. They are excellent role models-of moral character, academic integrity and leadership ability.
We recently asked newly elected Presidents Molly Black (SAA 8) and Arthur Wharton (SDS 8) a few questions to get to know them a little better, and this is what they had to say.
Why did you want to be SGA president?
Molly: I was a part of SGA last year and I loved it so much. The way a bunch of 7th and 8th graders were able to work together to plan and organize events and become a bigger part of their school was exciting. I knew by the end of the year I wanted to continue to be a part of SGA in 8th grade.
Arthur: I wanted to become president because I wanted to positively impact the school. I wanted to be a president who heard students' voices and concerns and tried to do something about it.
What did it mean to you to have the support of your classmates?
Molly: When it was announced that I was the 2023-2024 SGA president I was flattered. I could not believe that so many people thought that I best fit the role for SAA SGA president. Winning SGA president gave me the confidence boost I needed to be successful in the role.
Arthur: It meant a great deal to me to have my classmates’ support. There were some other great candidates. It meant a great deal to me to know I had been chosen-it meant that my fellow students had placed their faith in me to lead.
What are your goals as SGA president?
Molly: My biggest goal as SGA president is to make sure that school events are fun and engaging for students and that people look forward to the things we coordinate. I would also like to inspire younger students to join SGA when they get to junior high.
Arthur: I want people's voices to be heard. I want my year as president to make a lasting impact on the school. I want to organize in-school and out-of-school events to bring students together.
Do you think you will pursue leadership roles in high school?
Molly: Of course! Everything I am a part of in Junior High is preparing me for high school. I am so excited to have an opportunity to be in the SGA and other organizations for the rest of my school years.
Arthur: Yes, I think that I will pursue leadership roles in high school. I believe it is important to be a part of the school community by being a leader.
What is your favorite class and why?
Molly: There is something different to love about all my classes, but if I had to choose an overall favorite, it would be science. Instead of being in desks we stand at lab tables and learn new and interesting things every day. The atmosphere is also an important part of the learning process. When you walk into Mr. Henry’s classroom you know you're about to have some fun. When I get home from school and my mom asks me what I did today, there is a 99% chance whatever I talk about will be something I did in science.
Arthur: My favorite class has to be history. Although it is a challenging class, Mr. Goff makes classes fun. I have learned so much about history and being a better person from him. He gives his best effort when trying to teach.
What is your favorite thing about the school?
Molly: There are so many different things I love about St. Agnes. I love going to SGA meetings and laughing with my friends and going to school events. School is like my second home. It would definitely be the place I spend the most time at besides my actual home, so I have grown very attached to it.
Arthur: My favorite thing about St. Dominic is the teachers. They want you to succeed. The amount of positive energy they give each of the students is instrumental to success. Teachers offer to help if you are struggling. They always want what is best for the students.
How do you think junior high is preparing you for high school?
Molly: Junior high is definitely very different from lower school which already gives me the idea that high school is going to be an entirely different experience. When you are in junior high you get a lot more freedom, and with that freedom comes the lesson of responsibility. I know high school is a lot of responsibility so it's good that we get a taste of what that's like in 7th and 8th grade.
Arthur: I think the junior high is preparing me for high school through the emphasis on organization. The teachers make sure that we stay organized by doing notebook checks, and if we are not organized, they will help us. Organization is a big part of succeeding throughout your entire life.
What other activities are you involved in?
Molly: I am an office member in Beta Club which is new to us this year in junior high. I am Beta Club reporter which was another position that I had to write a speech and run for. Already being SGA president gave me the experience and knowledge to become the 2023-2024 Beta Club reporter.
Arthur: I play football, basketball, and run track. I believe it is important to be a well-rounded student. These sports help me build bonds with my fellow classmates that will last a lifetime.
