Library
Our Library and Learning Commons area with its vast collection of print and virtual resources is housed in the Veritas Research Center. The Research Center was built after years of research and study about technology integration upon gender-specific learning styles. Also located in the Research Center is our theater-style Distance Learning Center.
Library and Learning Commons
At the SAA-SDS Library, we believe it's the story that matters, not the method of delivery. We strive to foster a love of literature in our students by offering a print and electronic collection rich in popular and classic fiction. Our robust reference collection gives our students the opportunity to become competent researchers. Offering our materials in various formats provides access to information for all learning styles.
In a highly technological and on-demand world, we still believe reading for pleasure is a top priority. Our book clubs, author visits, and other programming offer opportunities for students to explore all types of literature in a fun and engaging community setting.
Our top priority in the library is to foster a love of reading in all our students. The library, in conjunction with teachers and parent volunteers, offers several reading incentive programs throughout the year. For more information on other incentive programs or to volunteer to help please email scasey@saa-sds.org.
Our Library book clubs nurture a love of reading in all students. The library offers various book clubs throughout the school year including Breakfast and a Book, Mom & Me, Father/Son, Junior High, and an Upper School book club.
The library houses an extensive collection of print materials for research and pleasure reading. Students may check out books during school hours and on Tuesdays in the summer. Our extensive parenting collection offers many excellent support resources for parents as they help navigate the ups and downs of raising children. Please click the link to search our library catalog.
One of the library's goals is to ensure each student leaves our campus with the ability to perform meaningful research using the best sources of information. The library provides an extensive set of academic databases to support this goal. Please follow the link to access all of our database resources.
E-books and Audiobooks
In an effort to support all learning styles and reading preferences, the library offers a selection of ebooks and audiobooks through our Overdrive digital library and our Follett Destiny bookshelf. Students may access these books using their school login credentials.
We appreciate our volunteers so much! There are many opportunities to help support the goals of the library by volunteering your time. Whether you would like to give an hour a week shelving books, or volunteer for a one-time event like the book fair, no amount of your time is too big or too small. If you would like to volunteer please contact scasey@saa-sds.org.
Distance Learning Center
The Distance Learning Center enhances education, giving our students access to people and places around the world.
Across the curriculum, lessons have been expanded to include live interactions with experts from multiple fields, including doctors, scientists, authors, musicians, museum curators, and more. Lessons come alive as students connect their learning through real-life problem-solving. Our students learn the organs of the body by watching medical students at St. Louis University dissect a cadaver. They interview authors about their work. They observe polar bears on the tundra, study paintings at museums across the country, and practice math at the Baseball Hall of Fame. Even our youngest students pay virtual visits to the San Diego Zoo and the rain forest.
Our students collaborate with students from other parts of the country or world through planned debates, novel discussions, and project collaborations. Every year we look forward to reconnecting with our favorite experiences and forging ahead to all the new possibilities that arise as more schools join us in our global pursuits.
